Interim Dean Combs


Joseph (Jody) Dale Combs, Jr. '87 was appointed Interim Dean of Libraries in August 2014. He is an alumnus of Vanderbilt University, having earned a Master of Arts from Vanderbilt's Graduate Department of Religion. He joined Vanderbilt's libraries in 1994. He has served the Heard Library in a variety of capacities over 20 years and was named associate dean of libraries in 2010.

He was recently selected as a Fellow for the Council for Library and Information Resources/EDUCAUSE Leading Change Institute, class of 2014. He serves on a variety of national committees including the Coalition for Networked Information, the Digital Preservation Network, the Southeastern Universities Research Association IT Committee, and the Vanderbilt/CLIR Committee on Coherence at Scale for Higher Education. He is the author of numerous articles and presentations on technologies in libraries and speaks regularly at conferences.

Under his leadership, Vanderbilt's Heard Library recently completely redeveloped its web site, implemented a significant expansion of the campus course management environment, supported Vanderbilt's first MOOC offerings, and developed a digital exhibits infrastructure for the renovated Central Library and Special Collections Gallery. Beginning in 2012, he established the Scholarly Communications team, encompassing open access advocacy and publishing, GIS and census information, and the institutional repository.

A native of Virginia, Jody holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia.
